Audubon Minnesota - Urban Birding Festival

Arden Hills Army Training Site – MN National Guard Readiness Center 4761 Hamline Ave, Arden Hills, MN 55126 –

Saturday May 14, 2016 Bird/Photo walks begins at 8am – 10am  Please be prompt because we need to stay in a group (they usually lock the gate behind us).

MUST BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OLD TO PARTICIPATE

I'll be hosting a basic bird photo walks in the Arden Hills Army Training Site for Audubon Minnesota’s Urban Birding Festival. My walk will focus more on bird photography than the other bird walks.  Come join me and bring your camera with the longest glass you can comfortably carry for 2 miles on gravel roads.  Good binoculars and bird book/app may come in handy.  I’ll share what I know about how to photograph birds while we walk through the old Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant (now known as the Arden Hills Army Training Site, AHATS).  This is not a workshop so no classroom stuff so ask lots of questions. There are all sorts of birds we may encounter including: common loons; trumpeter swans; osprey; various woodpeckers; bald eagles; turkey vultures; kestrels; harriers; hawks; various sparrows; warblers; meadowlarks; bluebirds; three different kinds of swallows, turkeys and more.  I haven't had time to train any of these animals to pose for us so there are no guarantees.  ;-)  Keep in mind, we'll be walking about two miles on gravel roads so you might want to leave the 600mm f4 and tripod at home unless you are really fit.  (NO old buildings remain on the AHATS site so if you are thinking about sneaking off to do some urban exploring, this isn’t the spot.)

There are bathrooms in the Readiness Center and water will be available but I suggest you bring what you need to stay hydrated and a snack, especially if it's really hot.  Bring sunscreen and bug juice.  You may pick up ticks if you walk through the grass.

We'll meet in the parking lot of the National Guard's new Readiness Center.  It's on Hamline Avenue and Ben Franklin Street in Arden Hills a couple blocks north of Ramsey County Road 96.  Take 35W North to the Ramsey Co. Rd. 96 exit (the next exit just north of 694).  Go east on Co Rd 96 a couple miles.  Take a left (North) at the stoplight at Hamline Avenue and stay on Hamline until you can't go any further (a gate will stop you so you can’t go too far) OR FOLLOW THE BIRD WALK SIGNS AS PLANS MAY CHANGE.  Park in the MN National Guard Readiness Center lot or where directed at the time.
