Lighting For Digital Photography

October 17, 2012 Posted by Blips

Lighting For Digital Photography “From snapshots to great shots” a new book from Syl Arena

Now that you’ve had your DSLR for a while, are you ready to take a much closer look at what creating a great image is all about? It’s all about light! The ability to see, influence, modify, control, and create light will take your images from snapshots to great shots!

In Lighting for Digital Photography: From Snapshots to Great Shots, photographer and bestselling author Syl Arena begins with a primer on light itself—how to see its direction, intensity, color, contrast, and hardness—and quickly moves on to discussions of shooting both indoors and outdoors in the many different conditions of natural or man-made light. Then the book digs in to begin creating light with photographic lights, whether that’s small flash or big strobe, the pop-up flash on your DSLR or continuous lights.

Follow along with Syl and you will:

  • Learn the basics (and beyond) of light modifiers that make light bigger and softer, such as umbrellas, softboxes, beauty dishes, and diffusion panels
  • Understand how to control and shape the light itself with flags, grids, snoots, and the zoom function on your flash
  • Appreciate the color temperature of light (whether that’s the sun, a light bulb, or a flash), and how to influence it with white balance settings on your camera and colored gels on your flash
  • Learn how to take great pictures across many different genres, from product and still life images, to simple (and not so simple) portraits and group shots

2013 MSF Commemorative Art Call for Submissions

Minnesota artists are encouraged to apply to create the 2013 Minnesota State Fair Commemorative Art. The final piece should be the artist’s visual interpretation of the Great Minnesota Get-Together. Attend this year’s State Fair for inspiration. The 2012 Minnesota State Fair runs Thursday, Aug. 23 through Labor Day, Sept. 3.

Application deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, by 4:30 p.m.

Commemorative Art Overview

The 2013 Minnesota State Fair Commemorative Art will be the 10th in a series of annual artwork created exclusively for the State Fair. This is the third year the State Fair is putting out a call for submissions. Last year, St. Paul artist Joe Heffron was selected from nearly 50 applicants. In previous years, Minnesota artists chosen have included: Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher (2004), Mary GrandPré (2005), Nancy Carlson (2006), Michael Birawer (2007), Edie Abnet (2008), Leo Stans (2009), Deborah Voyda Rogers (2010) and Steve Thomas (2011). A gallery of past artwork is available at mnstatefair.org/art.

Once the official artist is selected and the piece is completed, the commemorative art poster (18″ x 24″), a limited number of signed giclee prints (20″ x 25″) and other merchandise will be available for purchase beginning in summer 2013 to coincide with the State Fair. Proceeds will support the Minnesota State Fair Foundation 501(c)(3) mission to preserve and improve State Fair buildings, grounds and educational experiences. The original art will be the property of the Minnesota State Fair. The official artist will receive significant publicity, including a special event unveiling the commemorative art in the spring of 2013, press releases and features on the State Fair’s website and social media pages. The original art will be on display during the 12-day run of the 2013 State Fair.

Eligibility
The call for submissions is open to Minnesota residents only, age 18 and older, working primarily in two-dimensional media, suitable for duplication on posters. There is no entry fee. All Minnesota artists, with the exception of the chosen 2004-2012 Official Commemorative Artists, are eligible for consideration for 2013. Any artist who submitted work for consideration last year should resubmit all materials outlined in the application requirements to be considered again for
2013, as the application requirements have changed. Managers, officers and full-time, part-time, seasonal and fair-time employees of the Minnesota State Fair are not eligible.

Application Requirements
(Please note: application requirements have changed from previous years.)
You must submit the following materials in hard copy form:

  1. A completed application form (click here to download).
  2. An artist statement that describes why this particular submission would be a good fit for you, along with a detailed artistic description of the final artwork and the medium you would use to create it (maximum of two 8 ½” x 11″ pages, name on each page).
  3. A drawing/sketch that details and captures your visual interpretation. This should support the artistic description provided in the artist statement.
  4. A current resume (maximum of two 8 ½” x 11″ pages, name on each page).
  5. Between three and six representations of current two dimensional work, Please provide these samples in hard copy form – 8 ½” x 11″-sized photos or copies (no CDs, slides, electronic files or original art accepted). Each work sample should be labeled with full name, title of work, date of completion, medium and original dimensions.

The submissions will not be returned. Please do not staple or bind your application.

Selection Process

  1. A panel of judges will review the applications and invite a short list of applicants to present and share, in an interview-like setting, their artist statement and supporting sketch/drawing of their State Fair visual interpretation.
  2. The panel of judges will then select one official artist to finish his/her artwork in collaboration with State Fair staff. The final piece will be unveiled as the 2013 Minnesota State Fair Commemorative Art in spring 2013. The official artist will receive a commission of $5,000.

For more information regarding the application process and to download an application form please visit mnstatefair.org/art.
